This basic dish can be used alone, or as a springboard for creating salads and other Chinese dishes.


  • 3-4 lbs. broiler, cut up
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves crushed garlic
  • 1 teaspoon fresh minced ginger
  • ¾ teaspoons five-spice powder
  • teaspoon cinnamon, optional depending on powder
  • or
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed anise seed
  • teaspoon ground cloves
  • black pepper


Marinate chicken with the remaining ingredients for 3-4 hours by rubbing the marinade into the chicken several times.

Place pieces in greased pan, sprinkle with pepper, and bake for 1 hour at 325°F.
