Ingredients

  • ¾ cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ¼ cup unsulfured molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • pinch ground nutmeg
  • additional sugar

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°F and butter large, heavy cookie sheets. Melt shortening over low heat, and let stand until cool, but not set. Mix in sugar, molasses and egg. Combine rest of ingredients in a small bowl, then stir in shortening mixture by hand. Cover and refrigerate dough for 10 minutes.

Shape dough into 1-inch balls and roll in sugar, coating completely. Place on the cookie sheets 2 inches apart, and bake until cookies are just barely set, 7 to 9 minutes.
